Mara eased back into her seat by Duke, sipping her martini. Her heart was still racing from the encounter outside.

"You won't believe what just happened to me," she said, after another sip.

Duke looked up from the oyster he was busily dressing in salt, lime and a dash of Tabasco, raising a fine brow.

"My Uber driver chatted me up a bit on the way over. When we arrived and I was getting out, he popped up out of his seat and came around to my side when I was almost out. He pressed me against the car."

"What the fuck, Mara!" Duke exclaimed. "Are you OK? Do we need to call the police?"

"No, no. He didn't do anything really. It was strange- he put his face near my neck and then backed off. He said he was sorry, and he 'didn't even', then seemed really confused."

"Didn't even what?"

"I have no idea. He seemed almost scared. He did a weird lean to get away from me and raced off. I didn't have a chance to say anything, it all happened so quickly."

Duke was shaking his head in disbelief, looking the way Mara had felt.

"Everyone is on drugs these days!"

Mara raised her martini in agreement. "Except us, because we're too old! Cheers to that!"

"Excuse me, who is too old? I'll have some drugs, please!" Pretending to look around, he ducked his head under their table, searching.

They were still laughing when their server appeared, holding another round of cocktails- French martini for Mara and prosecco and lime for Duke. Mara was still sipping her first.

"Sorry- we didn't order these? Yet," she conceded.

The server, a pretty and very young looking blonde girl, smiled over her shoulder with a wink.

"They were sent over to you by your friend at the bar," she nodded toward the gentleman in question.

An older, but very fit looking man raised a neat Scotch toward them. Smiling, Mara and Duke also raised their new drinks in return.

"He could be my type,' Duke said, his eyes still on the gentleman. Mara agreed that he could very well be. Duke's 'type' was almost the fact that he did not, in fact, have any type at all. Tall, short, soft-bodied or lean, man or woman- there were no physical definitions to what drew him in, but every one of his lovers had an indefinable quality, an aura that distinguished them. A sense of the unexpected, and this fellow had it in spades.

Mara nudged Duke with her shoulder and raised her brow meaningfully.

'Go and introduce yourself. I'll look after the drinks." Mara gulped her martini and captured the next to indicate what she meant by 'look after'.

He studied her face, and Mara felt her cheeks bloom under his scrutiny, though she couldn't say why. "You've had a few strange moments the past day. Are you sure?"

Are you sure you're alright. Are you sure you want to be alone, was what he didn't say but Mara understood. Duke always knew how to let her know he was ready and there for her without making her feel ridiculous or coddled.
